Aloha Friday: The Perfect Loco Moco

January 25, 2026 by CurtisJ

It’s Friday in Hawaii, and that means one thing: time to kick back with some serious comfort food. This week, I’m celebrating with the dish that defines Hawaiian comfort—loco moco. Rice, burger, egg, gravy. Simple on paper, transcendent on the plate.

Every Friday, I like to share a Hawaiian recipe that captures the spirit of aloha. And nothing says “the week is done, let’s relax” quite like a bowl of loco moco. It’s the dish that tells you to slow down, eat well, and enjoy the moment.

Why Loco Moco on Friday?

There’s a reason this dish became a Friday tradition for me. After a long week, you don’t want complicated. You want satisfying. You want something that fills you up and makes you feel taken care of. Loco moco delivers on all counts—it’s fast, it’s hearty, and that runny egg yolk mixing with the gravy over rice is basically edible therapy. If you love the gravy-smothered patty but want to skip the egg, our Hamburger Steak is basically loco moco’s plate lunch cousin.

The Quick Weeknight Version

My Friday loco moco is streamlined for speed without sacrificing flavor:

Ingredients (per serving)

Loco moco ingredients laid out on a kitchen counter - ground beef patties, eggs, white rice, brown gravy ingredients, and onion
Everything you need for a quick Friday loco moco
  • 1 cup hot cooked rice
  • 1/4 lb ground beef, formed into a patty
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup brown gravy (store-bought is fine on Friday)
  • Salt, pepper, garlic powder
  • Green onions for garnish

The 15-Minute Method

  1. Season and cook the patty: Season your beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook in a hot skillet 4 minutes per side.
  2. Heat the gravy: While patty cooks, warm your gravy in a small pot or microwave.
  3. Fry the egg: In the same pan (use the burger drippings!), fry an egg sunny-side up. Keep that yolk runny!
  4. Assemble: Rice in bowl, patty on rice, egg on patty, gravy over everything.
  5. Garnish and enjoy: Scatter green onions, grab a fork, and dig in.

Friday Night Upgrades

Got a little more time? Level up your loco moco:

  • Homemade gravy: Use the pan drippings, add butter, flour, beef broth, and Worcestershire
  • Caramelized onions: Cook some onions until sweet and golden, serve on top
  • Cheese: Melt a slice of cheddar on the patty
  • Double down: Two patties, two eggs, no regrets

The Aloha Friday Spirit

In Hawaii, Friday has its own vibe. It’s called “Aloha Friday”—a tradition dating back to the 1940s when businesses started allowing casual dress to end the week. It’s about relaxation, about community, about celebrating that we made it through another week.

Making loco moco on Friday is my way of honoring that spirit. It’s not about impressing anyone or trying something fancy. It’s about comfort, satisfaction, and the simple pleasure of a really good meal. Make It Your Tradition

I challenge you: make loco moco this Friday. Keep it simple. Don’t stress about making everything from scratch. Just rice, burger, egg, gravy. Sit down. Take a breath. Break that yolk.

That’s the aloha Friday feeling. That’s loco moco.

Happy Friday. You’ve earned it.
